Hi! I’ve been a professional musician & educator since 1990 & I’m a multi award winning, internationally acclaimed guitarist, composer & bandleader. Originally from the UK, I relocated to the NYC area at the end of 2015 where I’m  already one of the major figures on the scene on my instrument. I’m mostly known for playing jazz professionally, but I have played in rock, soul, folk, Latin bands etc etc over the years & love all kinds of music. During my career, I’ve worked with a huge cross section of artists within the umbrella of jazz including David Liebman, Charles Earland, Steve Lacy, Maceo Parker, Barbra Streisand, The BBC big band and many more as well as leading my own bands featuring US stars such as Mark Turner, Billy Hart, Donny McCaslin, James Genus, Adam Nussbaum, In etc & well as working working with partner Christine Tobin.

As an educator, I held professor posts in most of the major London colleges for many years including the Royal Academy of Music (of which I was made an honorary associate in 2015), The Guildhall School of Music & Drama & Trinity Laban college of music. I have also been a visiting teacher in European colleges, workshops and summer camps. In NYC I’m a regular visiting teacher in the ‘Jazz for kids’ program at the Jazz Standard, I’ve presented workshops at Rochester International festival, The Irish Arts Center & many other places plus I’ve made 2 jazz lesson videos for mikesmasterclasses.com which you can see previews of on his site. You can also find out more about me, hear clips, see vids etc at http://www.philrobson.net

“Phil Robson is a disturbingly good jazz guitarist” – Wayne Krantz

Teaching Info

Although I’m a jazz guitar specialist, I can help guitar students of all levels & I have a broad knowledge of popular guitar styles such as rock, blues, funk, etc as well. If you are interested in jazz however, I can guide you from the basics or at a very advanced stage of development & everything in between. Maybe you just need some feedback on your playing or compositions? You may be someone who simply wishes to learn a few songs, chords or riffs? Perhaps you are experienced already but wish to expand on that further by expanding chord knowledge, improving your technique, learning vocab & styles or reading music? Whichever of these it is, I’m very happy to assist. I can also help people on any instrument with understanding music theory. I teach mostly in the Manhattan area but will travel to you if you’re close with easy access by subway.
