Bio
Ran Livneh is a Brooklyn-based acoustic and electric bassist, composer, and producer whose collaborations span a wide spectrum of globally acclaimed artists, including Kaleta Leon Ligan-Majek (Fela Kuti), Brian Chase, Stephen Ulrich (Big Lazy), Liraz, Gili Yalo, Ismael Kouyate, Anbessa Orchestra, Habbina Habbina, and Tamar Eisenman. As both a bandleader and co-leader, Ran helms projects such as Underground Spiritual Game (Vibromonk Records), the post-jazz soundscape trio dustlights (Ropeadope Records), Tea Masters (Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit Records), and the double bass quartet Adnata Ensemble (Fallen Moon Recordings).
His original compositions have been featured at prestigious cultural events, including the 12th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, the Rockaway Film Festival, and the Museum of Wild Newfangled Art. Ran’s work blends acoustic and electronic sounds, with a distinctive focus on groove and improvisation, drawing from Afrobeat, Ethiopian, Gnawa, Mediterranean music and jazz.
Since 2018, he has also pioneered soundscape projects, collaborating with practitioners of dance, yoga, meditation, and breathwork to provide live soundscapes for large group practices.
Ran holds a Bachelor of Arts in Classical Double Bass Performance from The Rubin Academy of Music and Dance in Jerusalem, where he studied with Maestro Dr. Michael Klinghoffer. He has also pursued studies with prominent artists Ben Street and William Parker and has studied counterpoint with Judith Berkson.
Teaching Info
I love teaching bass. For me teaching music involves guiding individuals to connect with their imagination and emotions through sound and rhythm. By exploring various musical elements such as tempo, melody, and harmony, we learn to find their own voice in music.
Finding one’s voice as a bass player involves a delicate balance between honing your individual style while also grounding yourself in the foundational principles of bass playing. Exploring different techniques, tones, and approaches to discover what resonates with you personally. However, it’s equally important to understand the role of the bass in music—to provide the solid foundation and groove that underpins the entire song. This involves studying various genres, learning from recordings of master bassists, and developing a keen sense of rhythm and timing.
Finding your voice as a bassist means expressing yourself authentically while serving the music and contributing to its overall groove and feel.
Classes are held at a music studio in Brooklyn or online.
