Bio
Hi there! My name is Caleb, I’m a professional musician and educator with 15 years of playing experience, 13 years of professional performance experience, and 11 years of educational experience. I’m originally from Maine, where I began to play the trumpet in the fall of 2009.
I moved to Greenville, SC in 2015 and shortly thereafter began working, somewhat in apprenticeship, with the Greenville Jazz Collective. I performed locally with them and gained experience administering masterclasses and clinics in local public schools, private schools, and universities.
In 2018 I moved to Texas to begin my undergraduate at the University of North Texas’ esteemed jazz program. In 2019, I joined the One O’Clock band as an improvising trumpet player and began to lead masterclasses and clinics in educational environments. While at UNT I privately studied classical trumpet performance for two years before moving on to a completely jazz-focused education.
After graduating from UNT in 2022, I moved down the road to Dallas and began teaching masterclasses as a guest artist and private lessons in Dallas public schools as an alumni representative of UNT. In Dallas, I maintained residencies at several local venues and was featured as a guest artist around town.
I moved to NYC in September of 2024 and I maintain both a freelance studio of students (both around the city and on Zoom) and a studio of trumpet players at New York University as a graduate adjunct instructor. While at NYU I have studied composition, improvisation, and lead trumpet performance styles.
Teaching Info
My teaching philosophy is centered around helping the student build a consistent routine that fuels – and is fueled by – regular creative discovery. Routine, especially for a trumpet player, is key to not just technical success, but artistic growth and satisfaction.
For non-trumpet players, my lessons are centered on listening, aural skills, music theory, transcription, analysis, and then replication of linguistic phrases. These skills can help the student compose, improvise, or simply hear music with a deeper understanding. I attempt to tie in cultural relevance and historical significance to all the music we listen to and study.
I compare it to a LEGO set – my goal is to teach people how to build with their imagination and break away from the prescribed instructions. But with a constructive discipline 🙂
For trumpet players, my lessons include all of the above topics, but with a great focus on fundamental techniques. I’m a student and teacher of the Caruso method which I have learned from Philip Dizack and Mike Rodriguez – both students of Laurie Frink. My students and I practice Caruso, the essential fundamental books, the essential etudes, and the lineage of the trumpet family in various genres.
