Bio

Dawn Kim is a violinist based in New York City, with a deep commitment to both classical and contemporary music. Originally from South Korea, she began her violin studies at the age of six and later joined the Juilliard Pre-College Division at twelve, studying under Hyo Kang and I-Hao Lee. At eleven, she made her Carnegie Hall debut as a winner of the American Protégé Music Competition.

Dawn holds both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Laurie Smukler and Joseph Lin. She has received additional mentorship from internationally acclaimed artists including Almita Vamos, David Chan, and Pierre Amoyal.

A dedicated chamber musician, Dawn has participated in festivals all around the world including the Yellowbarn Young Artists Program, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Pablo Casals Festival (France), the Singapore Violin Festival, Incheon Hic et Nunc (South Korea,) and the Mozarteum Summer Academy (Austria.) She has worked with members of the Juilliard String Quartet (past and present), Mark Steinberg of the Brentano Quartet, and members of the Shanghai and Meta4 Quartets.

Dawn is equally active in new music, and took part in the premiere of a new work at Alice Tully Hall, which was awarded the Gena Raps Piano Chamber Music Prize. As a quartet fellow at EAMA, she helped workshop and record new compositions by emerging composers. Her violin-piano duo with pianist Lucia Li explores jazz-pop crossovers and music by underrepresented composers.

An enthusiastic educator, Dawn has served as a teaching fellow in Juilliard’s Morse Teaching Artist Fellowship, assisting with group violin classes in NYC public schools. She also taught in the Juilliard Music Advancement Program (MAP), coaching young musicians aged 9–17 in orchestral and ensemble settings. She believes in empowering students to use music as a means of self-expression and creative connection.

Teaching Philosophy

My goal as a teacher is to give students the tools they need to grow independently. In my own musical journey, every teacher I’ve worked with eventually stepped away—but the lessons they left with me remained. Learning from a variety of mentors helped me build the confidence to continue learning on my own, and I aim to instill that same confidence in my students.

I approach music education holistically—acknowledging its physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. Playing the violin requires athletic coordination and body awareness. When these are overlooked, it can lead to poor technique and even injury. But when students understand their physical relationship to the instrument, they are freer to express themselves musically and meaningfully.

Musicality, to me, comes from introspection and learning to listen to one’s inner voice. This type of expression taps into something deeply human—feelings that often go beyond words.

I believe teaching begins with creating a space where students feel seen, heard, and safe. I always begin lessons by asking how my students are doing—not just as musicians, but as people. This social-emotional connection is foundational. When students feel supported and involved in their own learning, they become curious, engaged, and self-motivated.

I take the responsibility of teaching seriously. I prepare thoughtfully for each lesson, tracking progress, planning weekly goals, and reflecting on how I can better support each student. This practice of intentional teaching models the kind of mindful, self-aware learning I hope to cultivate in my students.

I believe in encouragement over intimidation. A supportive studio environment builds trust, inspires risk-taking, and nurtures creativity. As my studio grows, I hope to foster a community where students not only learn from me—but from one another.

Ultimately, I believe that a holistic approach helps students develop the skills—and the joy—that will stay with them long after the lesson ends.
