Bio

Ellen Fishman is an accomplished composer based in Brooklyn, New York. Her early training included the study of piano, clarinet and saxophone, with emphasis on jazz improvisation.  She studied music composition at San Francisco State University, University of California, Berkeley, the Peabody Conservatory, and at the Conservatoire Américain de Fontainebleau. Beyond her musical portfolio, Ellen is also recognized as an Apple Distinguished Educator and the former Director of the Arts and New Media at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia, a position she held from 2012 to 2022. During her tenure, she taught hundreds of students Songwriting, Music Production and Video Production and taught music composition at Temple University.

Teaching Info

The lessons are individualized for each student to meet short term and long term goals. The idea is to get you to where you want to be by realizing what you want to hear.

• Music production based composition -this option is for those who want to learn to compose and produce music in the computer (usually although not always in popular styles) for eventual use in a recording studio and on stage.
• Music composition -this option is for those who want to write for instruments, voice, ensembles or film. Learning music notation is a big component here.
• Songwriting-this option is for those who want to write songs produce their own music. While overlaps with Music production, the emphasis is on creating lyric based music.

I am an expert at notation based and digital based music composition. Students will learn how to compose while learning how to use digital tools to hear their progress and learn the necessary music fundamentals you will need to realize your music. All styles are welcome including classical, jazz and popular styles and I am able to teach all levels from beginner to advanced and have experience teaching all ages (from 10 years old). Expert at Logic Pro, GarageBand, Abelton Live, Finale/Dorico and online resources (NoteFlight, SoundTrap etc.) for composition.
