Bio
Trumpet player, Sam Atlas, is a freelance musician in New York City. As an orchestral musician, she has enjoyed performing with orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, the Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra, and as principal trumpet with the Manhattan School of Music’s Opus 130 Orchestra. Sam has performed on tour with the Oberlin Orchestra in Carnegie Hall, and with the Norwalk Youth Symphony in Prague, Vienna, Salzberg, Munich, Berlin, and Leipzig, playing major symphonic works such as Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. She has attended the Aspen Music Festival, Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute, the Eastern Music Festival, Tom Hooten’s Trumpet Mastery Course, and the New England Music Camp. Sam remains on the sub lists for the New World Symphony, Calliope Brass, Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, Amadeo Philharmonic Society, and Symphony in C. In addition to her orchestral performances, Sam is one of the founding members of Mahogany Brass, a touring brass quintet with guest recitals at the University of Massachusetts. Sam has had ongoing church engagements in New York, Ohio, New Jersey, and Connecticut for services like Easter and Christmas.
Sam is an avid educator and has taken an active role creating and maintaining a small trumpet studio since 2017. She has taught general music at a local school in Bridgeport and served as a section leader of the University of Miami’s Frost Band of the Hour. Sam was the trumpet teacher for the Community Music School in Oberlin, Ohio and is now on faculty at the Larchmont Music Academy as well as Virtu Academy. Most recently, she had taught students at the Aspen Music Festival. As a teacher, she firmly believes that each individual learns and grows in different ways, and she strives to communicate her knowledge in a variety of forms in order to ensure that each student can maximize their learning and find their own voice through the trumpet.
Sam is obtaining her Master of Music in Orchestral Performance at the Manhattan School of Music, studying with Ethan Bensdorf. She completed her Bachelor of Music at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Roy Poper.
